RCPT 344: Program Design and Evaluation in Recreation Therapy

Prerequisite: RCPT major and completion of BIOL 322 or BIOL 310:311 with a grade of 鈥淐鈥 or better, overall cumulative GPA of 2.5, or permission of instructor

Provides detailed knowledge of the intervention planning process, including program or treatment plan design and development, programming considerations, types of programs, nature and scope of interventions, and selection of programs to achieve the assessed needs and desired outcomes of the person served.

 

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

 

This course is designed to integrate instructional material with actual practice of recreation therapy programming. Students will be asked to analyze activity offerings, leadership and intervention techniques, disability characteristics, and agency focus and need. They will have the opportunity to develop a recreation therapy program for RU Recreation Therapy Services. Emphasis will be placed on client assessments, specific goals and objectives, activity adaptation, and program and client evaluation and documentation as it applies to quality assurance and standards applied by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. This course will address material included in the examination for certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.

 

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

Through lecture, discussion, experiential learning activities, and written assignments students will be asked to review literature and discuss programming theories and designs presented.  Students will be asked to develop a recreation therapy program for RU Recreation Therapy Services including assessment, goals and objectives, activity offerings, and evaluation. There will be group and individual work during the semester.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. Demonstrate an understanding of, and ability to, analyze and apply health care and therapeutic recreation delivery models, theories and concepts

2. Demonstrate the ability to collaborate and integrate therapeutic recreation into services provided by other disciplines. 

3. Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply inclusive practices to the design and operation of accessible therapeutic recreation programs, services and facilities.

4. Demonstrate an ability to apply leisure education content and techniques with individuals, families, and caregivers.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply the therapeutic recreation programming process, including activity and task analyses, to design individual and group programs and/or treatment plans in various settings. 

6. Demonstrate the ability to plan and effectively implement instruction, leadership, supervision, counseling and facilitation techniques and interventions in individual and group formats to reach client goals and outcomes.

7. Demonstrate an ability to utilize a variety of assistive techniques, adaptive devices and equipment, and program adaptations to assist individuals with illnesses and disabilities to achieve maximum independence.

8. Understanding of and ability to apply legal and ethical principles to the practice and conduct of therapeutic recreation services.

 

Assessment Measures

Student progress will be assessed through program planning and implementation projects, exams, and documentation assignments.
