SOWK 425: Gerontology: Social Welfare Aspects

Surveys the problems of the aged with particular emphasis on the network of social services available to serve the elderly in contemporary society.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course focuses on identifying, accessing, and coordinating appropriate services to address the social, physical, and psychological needs of older persons.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Through a series of lectures, guest speakers, discussions, films and field trips (if possible), students will be exposed to the geriatric population and their issues.

 

Goals and Objectives of Course

  • Student will become more sensitive to the issues confronting older persons
  • Student will become more cognizant of programs and policies designed to target the elderly population.
  • Student will demonstrate an understanding of the interface between service needs and the identification, access and coordination of services.

 

Assessment Measures

There will be a mid-term and final exam. A major portion of the course relates to a term project consisting of a research paper and an oral report. During the semester each student will interview an older 鈥渃lient鈥 of whom the term project is based. The assignment will be discussed in greater detail early in the semester. The class participation component of the final grade will be determined by attendance, class discussion and written reactions to video presentations as well as other brief writing assignments requested by the instructor.

Grading Scale:

  • A = 90-100
  • B = 80-89
  • C = 70-79
  • D = 60-69
  • E = Below 60

Students are expected to attend each class.
