THEA 330: Theatre Design I

Prerequisites: THEA 201, THEA 231, and THEA 232

Credit Hours: (3)

A study in the fundamentals of design for theatrical venues including the conceptualization process. Students will be introduced to each design area including scenery, costume, lighting and sound.

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.

 

Detailed Description of Course

The purpose of the course is to expose the student to the aesthetic and practical considerations of collaboration inherent in the design process.

 

1. Students will explore the use of various rendering media such as watercolour, acrylic, pencils, oil, etc.
2. Students will explore the collaborative process by developing projects for each of the design areas using various media and methods.
3. Students will learn the process used to develop a conceptual idea for the design process.
4. Students will learn vocabulary necessary to properly function as a member of the design team.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course.

An informal approach to the discovery of the principles used in Theatrical Design. This course will include projects that will allow the student to explore all areas of theatrical design.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course.

1. Students will be able to demonstrate the basic skills used in theatrical design.
2. Students will have a working vocabulary necessary for the design process.
3. Students will have the basic skills necessary to develop a design.

 

Assessment Measures.

Graded assignments may include: a final examination, the completion and presentation of theatrical designs and class preparation and participation.

 

Other Course Information.

The instructor may demonstrate drawing, rendering and modeling techniques.
