Theatre 366: Travel Study

Credit Hours: (1-12)

Academic study involving domestic and/or international travel.

Note(s): May be taken again for credit with different topics or areas of study.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The course is designed for upper level theatre students and as a humanities elective for students in other majors. It fulfills a General Education requirement. The content of the course will relate to the theatre, art, architecture, culture, and art collections of the specific country where the course is conducted.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course requires class participation in the analysis of theatrical work. Instead of classroom lectures, students will view actual works of theatre, art and architecture under discussion.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the students will be able to:

1. Discuss characteristics of Western theatre and civilization of the period(s) being studied.
2. Analyze a theatrical work with regard to style and genre.
3. Use the necessary vocabulary and basic concepts associated with the study of theatre history in discussion and writing.
4. Recognize the basic stylistic characteristics of the artistic periods being taught and in specific works of theatre.
5. Identify major artists and works of the period(s) under discussion.
6. Define the role of theatre within the cultural, political, and sociological context of the times.

 

Assessment Measures

Each student will maintain a detailed journal of their activities. At the end of the study each student will complete a post evaluation of their experiences with the designated faculty supervisor. A written post evaluation including a journal consisting of a daily log of activities and a comprehensive objective evaluation of the experience. The journal should conclude with a subjective assessment of the experience in its totality.
