WGST 490: Special Topics Seminar in Women鈥檚 and Gender Studies
Prerequisites: WGST 200 or permission of instructor
Credit Hours: (3)
Concentrated study on specific areas in Women鈥檚 Studies. May be taken for credit as often as course content varies. Content will be approved by the Women鈥檚 Studies Advisory Committee. May not be taken if WMST 490 was completed for credit.
Detailed Description of Course
Content will vary. Some possible topics are 鈥淔emale Slave Narratives,鈥 鈥淭oni Morrison- Texts and Contexts,鈥 鈥淲omen鈥檚 Bodies: Reproductive Rights, Technologies and Motherhood,鈥 and 鈥淕ender, Technology and the Body.鈥
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The course will be conducted using lecture and discussion. It may incorporate the use of web resources or an experiential learning component. Emphasis will be placed on student interaction and collaboration.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
1.Students will develop a deeper awareness of women鈥檚 historical roles in particular
domains.
2. Students will become more sophisticated in their critical analysis of contemporary
events in terms of gender.
3. Students will have the opportunity to delve deeply into a particular aspect of
women鈥檚 lives.
4. Students gain more experience with the theoretical perspectives and research methods
in Women鈥檚 Studies.
5. Students will become adept at using technology to locate, access and integrate
information.
Assessment Measures
Individual or group research projects leading to written papers or oral presentations or performances, written or oral examinations, dialogue journal on assigned readings, experiential learning project and report, and research paper/scholarly essay.
